Neeraj Chopra, a young javelin thrower, has established himself as one
of India's greatest track and field talents in recent years. Chopra shot to
fame after winning a gold medal in the 2016 Junior World Championships in
Poland.
With a throw of 86.48 metres, he set the junior world mark, which was even
further than the distance thrown to earn the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics
a month later.
In 2018, the 23-year-old made even more progress by capturing gold medals at
the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. With a throw of 88.06 metres at
the Asiad in Indonesia (2018), he set a new national record.
Neeraj had elbow surgery on his throwing arm in May of this year. While
recuperating from his injuries, he missed the IAAF World Championships,
Diamond League, and Asian Championships. He was supposed to compete in the
National Championships at the end of 2019, however the Athletics Federation of
India (AFI) refused to let him compete, giving him additional time to
recover.
After surgery, Neeraj made a strong return, qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics
with a throw of 87.86m in the ACNE League competition in South Africa in
January 2020.

Chopra, like many athletes throughout the world, missed excellent events for
more than a year because to the Covid-19 epidemic. However, in March of this
year, he beat his own National record by throwing a distance of 88.07m in
Patiala, which was also his best throw of the season.
Neeraj is from the hamlet of Khandra in Panipat, Haryana. He went to
Chandigarh's DAV College to study.
He was appointed as a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army as a junior commissioned
officer in 2016. He is presently a Subedar in the army.
Last Year March, He donated Rs 2 lakh to PM Cares fund for the Covid-19
pandemic. So great of him.
Neeraj Chopra hasn't only etched his name into the annals of history.
He will be recognised as an Olympic gold medalist for the rest of his
life.
And keep in mind that his age is only 23 years. He might very well be in
position to add another Olympic gold medal to his collection in Paris in
2024.

But Now,
The Indian National Anthem was performed in the Olympics for the first time
since 2008. And it's all owing to Neeraj Chopra, a 23-year-old javelin
thrower.
Neeraj has accomplished what no other Indian athlete has: he has won an
Olympic gold medal in athletics.
TOKYO: Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra became only the second Indian to
win an individual gold medal at the Olympics on Saturday, outperforming the
competition by a wide margin to claim the country's first-ever medal.
The 23-year-old farmer's son from Khandra village near Panipat in Haryana
stunned the sports world by throwing 87.58 metres in the finals, ending
India's 100-year wait for an Olympic track and field gold.
The country has now eclipsed its previous record haul of six medals from the
2012 London Olympics.
Jakub Vadlejch (86.67m) & Vitezslav Vesely (85.44m) of the
Czech Republic won silver and bronze, respectively.
Chopra entered the final as a medal possibility after dominating the
qualification round on Wednesday with a spectacular 86.59m first round
throw.
Few, though, would have predicted that he would smash his way to gold in such
a dominating manner on the biggest platform.
Chopra has accomplished something that the likes of late Milkha Singh and P T Usha were unable to do in the 1960 and 1984 editions.
Since the country began competing in the Games in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920, no Indian has won a medal in athletics..
